Costo supplies internal transport and pick-to-light for Bever’s new distribution centre

Want to get more capacity from your warehouse?

Smart logistics for Bever.

In collaboration with racking supplier Dexion, Costo made an important contribution to the logistics setup of Bever’s new distribution centre in Pijnacker. For this project, Costo supplied and implemented the roller conveyors, spiral conveyor and pick-to-light system. The systems are also controlled by Costo’s logistics software: an in-house developed WCS (Warehouse Control System).

The challenge

Growth requires smart logistics..

Bever, the leading Dutch outdoor retailer, opened its new headquarters and distribution centre in Pijnacker in 2025. To support the continued growth of both its nearly 50 stores and its e-commerce activities, Bever opted for an integrated warehouse solution in which storage, internal transport and order picking work seamlessly together.

While Dexion was responsible for the racking systems and overall coordination, Costo supplied the logistics systems that ensure an efficient flow of goods throughout the warehouse. Thanks to this collaboration, Bever now has a distribution centre that combines maximum capacity with fast and accurate order processing.

The solution

Smarter processing, less storage.

One of the key challenges in developing the new distribution centre was to create more capacity within a relatively compact space. At the same time, the logistics operation needed to efficiently support both the replenishment of nearly 50 stores and Bever’s growing e-commerce activities.

Every week, Bever processes approximately 80,000 incoming products. These are divided into three logistics groups: binnable products stored in crates, non-binnable products and shoes stored in pallet racking almost 13 metres high, and shoes, which are stored in large-compartment racking within the same high-bay environment.

An important principle of the design was to minimise unnecessary storage of goods. Today, 30% of incoming items no longer need to be stored in the warehouse first. Through a smart sorting and cross-docking process, these products are assigned directly to stores and sent to the correct destination without intermediate storage. This shortens lead times, reduces internal transport movements and makes optimal use of the available storage space.

The solution

Efficient transport between warehouse levels.

An important part of the installation is the spiral conveyor, which provides a continuous connection between the different levels of the distribution centre. This vertical transport solution allows goods to be moved quickly and reliably without additional forklift movements or manual handling.

The conveyor system plays a central role in the outbound process. Employees pick orders from the shelving on the first floor. The picked items are placed in crates and then transported via the roller conveyors and spiral conveyor to the ground floor. There, the crates are distributed across three chutes, after which the orders are processed further.

The solution

Faster and error-free order picking with pick-to-light.

For the next stage of the order-picking process, Costo implemented a pick-to-light system integrated into the shelving. Once the crates arrive downstairs via the conveyor, products from the different logistics groups are brought together using pick-to-light to create complete customer or store orders.

The technology guides employees to the correct locations using clear light signals and indicates exactly which items need to be added. This allows orders to be assembled quickly and accurately while minimising search and checking times.

Comprehensive solution

Collaboration for a future-proof warehouse.

With the new distribution centre now operational, Bever has a logistics environment that is ready for further growth. The transport and order-picking systems implemented by Costo contribute every day to the fast, reliable and efficient handling of goods flows for both Bever’s stores and online customers.

“This project shows how collaboration can help you get the most out of a logistics operation,” says Hans van den Berg of Costo. “Together, we have created a complete solution in which storage, internal transport and order picking work seamlessly together. Even for individual projects, our systems and software can make an important contribution to accelerating and optimising logistics processes.”

With our new distribution centre, we have taken an important step in preparing our logistics operations for further growth. The combination of internal transport, the spiral conveyor and pick-to-light helps us process our goods flows efficiently and supply both our stores and online customers quickly and reliably. Our collaboration with Costo has helped ensure that these different processes are seamlessly integrated.
